Sony Touch Edition - Review E-book reader

A few months ago, exasperated by the increasing amount of poor quality books, I decided to take an important step, stop reading the paper volumes and entrust the ebook. After a short trial period on my netbook, I thought I'd lay down my computer revolution with the purchase of an ebook reader.

The first thought obviously went to the famous Amazon's ebook reader, the Kindle. Due to his unavailability for the Italian public, I prayed to the new range of Sony's ebook reader comprises a reader named Pocket Edition (5 "), a Touch Edition (6" touch screen) and a Daily Edition (7 "which was released later, however).

After a brief assessment I opted for the Touch Edition that I bought online with the hard case with external light.

After some months of purchase, let me share with you my impressions of use of this interesting device.

First you will be intrigued as I was about to screen for electronic inks in place of traditional LCD. Compared to the latter lacks backlighting but on the other hand is also eliminated the "shine" in open places or otherwise sunny.

The result is that the 'ebook reader is much more usable outside of the house while it is less suitable for reading in closed spaces. This feature is only partially mitigated by the adoption of an optional external light that is directed with skill to avoid disturbing reflections on the screen.

The second important issue is the refresh rate. About this may distinguish between those that are generated pdf "appropriate" and those obtained by scanning of physical pages. The latter, in addition to weigh much more in terms of size, suffer from the inability to make the text larger (because of course the text is not recognized as such) and take up a much higher refresh rates. It is not uncommon to wait a couple of seconds before you see appear the next page.

Let's independence. The most decanted of screens for electronic inks is that they consume energy only during the regeneration phase of the page, which leads to measure the autonomy not in terms of hours, but of viewable pages. Autonomy is curiously smoky declared talking about it for a lifetime "up to 2 weeks" without mentioning the amount of page views. I have personally experienced that, with an intense use of a couple of hours a day (my typical evening use), the battery lasts for more than a week. Even more annoying is the fact that the battery seems to discharge even when the device is turned off by that, after a week of inactivity, you may find it drain on power. In this regard I also find very annoying the absence of a charger independent being provided only the USB cable.

Up to now it might seem that I am unhappy with my ebook reader but it is not. Even with the flaws, in fact, I find it extremely gratifying to me the possibility to bring thousands of ebooks displayed in seconds. The Sony Touch edition then allows the creation of notes, both visual and textual, in a few moments, as well as the search for English words in the dictionary built-in function is convenient for those who habitually pdf reader in technical language. It 'also appreciated the feature that allows to change the page orientation of the book to read in "landscape" format of the scanned books with small fonts.

If I make another note to 'ebook reader from Sony is the inability to group type for ebook or folders using only the device. It must be done to use Sony's software (or other software like Calibre) to be installed on a PC to synchronize groups of ebook counterparts.

This is inconvenient (or almost impractical) for someone like me is forced to use different computers during the day (pc business, desktop, netbook). Another inconvenience is the fact that even the 'ebook reader does not appear as the title of the book the name of the file but the tag "title" metadata contained in the pdf. Several pdf unfortunately are badly implemented from this point of view and it is not uncommon to find books that have completely differing from the contents of the metadata file.

Despite all this, I was better with the 'Sony Reader ebook reading. Unlike netbooks, tablet or PDA, if you prefer, the 'ebook reader is in fact a dedicated device so that immediately immerses the reader in the same physical aperture of a hardcover book. There are boot times, there are temptations due to internet connection, there are no system crashes to disturb our loved reading.
